"OWL Be Watching" - I've been wanting to do an owl piece for a while because I think they are such amazing birds, and today I was finally able to find the smoke images to inspire me.
I sell my smoke art and had a customer request a blue version for her husband. If you would like any of my pieces in another color scheme, please ask, because I can usually accommodate that.
So what is Smoke Art?
All the pieces you see begin as photographs I have taken of incense smoke, which becomes the medium to create an art print. Upon viewing the photos, images will become apparent to me, as I tease them out of the twirls and swirls that are naturally formed. Some pieces will remain in a more natural, abstract form, while others may end up as a literal interpretation of a concept. Either way, much of the work involved is done in the digital darkroom, where I work with the design and color of the image with Photoshop.
For those that are interested, I'm using a Canon 5dMII, manual mode, 50mm 1.8, f14, shutter 200, ISO 200, flash 1/8 power. The flash is off camera, Canon Speedlight 580ex, to the left with barn doors made from black paper to prevent lens flare and to keep light off the backdrop. The backdrop is black fabric but I then invert the image in Photoshop (CS4) which changes the background to white.
