'The Cyclist'

'The Cyclist'

In 1998 the small Irish town of Enniscorthy became one of the smallest to host a stage of the Tour de France as part of the bi-centenary comemorations of the 1798 Rebellion. The rebellion had been inspired by the ideals of the French Revolution and Enniscorthy had been location where the rebels made a last stand.

To mark the tenth anniversary of this unique sporting occasion the local town council commissioned Mark Rode, an Australian living in County Mayo, to create this bronze sculpture of a racing cyclist. It is located in the Duffry Gate area of the town as was unveiled by four-time Tour de France Green Jersey winner Sean Kelly from Carrick-on-Suir.
